Golf Net and Mat Setup: What You Need for Home Practice

by Good Round Supply

A complete golf net and mat setup needs more than a target. You need a net that fits the space, a stable hitting surface, a suitable stance area, enough swing clearance, and containment for the shots the room may produce.

Setting up indoors? Use the golf simulator room measurement guide to record ceiling height, width, depth, and swing clearance before choosing your net and hitting surface.

Quick purchase decision: net only, package, or simulator?

Use what you already own to avoid buying the same equipment twice.

Your starting point First purchase decision Next step
Suitable hitting mat and stance surface already owned Choose a net-only product that fits your space Compare net sizes
Starting without a net or turf Compare a net-and-turf package with separate products Browse current practice nets and package options
Compatible Net Return net already owned; want projection Add the matching screen or screen-and-valence kit Compare screen upgrades
Want a complete electronic simulator Plan the containment, tracking, display, and computer together Use the complete simulator checklist

Net Return confirmed that its current packages include 10-by-6-foot Pro Turf. Do not assume a smaller net means a smaller included turf footprint. Compare the selected package's complete contents with the net-only product; a launch monitor, projector, computer, and software are not implied by a golf practice package.

Use this guide to decide what you already own, what a package includes, and what you still need to buy.

Home or Pro net and mat package: compare the actual purchase

Starting point Home option Standard Pro option
Suitable hitting surface already owned Home net, $695.00 Pro net, $795.00
Need net and turf together Home practice package, $1,399.00 Pro practice package, $1,499.00

USD prices checked October 9, 2026, before shipping and tax. A package includes more than the net, compare the current contents before treating the price difference as the cost of turf alone. These are practice packages, not complete electronic simulators.

The floor space is the same for the included turf: 10 by 6 feet in either package. Home has a 7 by 7 foot net frame; the standard Pro is 8 feet wide and 7 feet 6 inches high. Add swing clearance and any extra protection your setting needs. Compare Home vs Pro and the other net sizes, then open the selected package to confirm its components and checkout shipping.

The complete shopping checklist

  1. Practice net: Choose a frame that fits the measured clear space.
  2. Hitting surface: Use turf or a mat designed for repeated club impact.
  3. Stance area: Keep the golfer stable and consider the height difference between the feet and ball.
  4. Side containment: Add compatible barriers when the room or shot pattern calls for them.
  5. Overhead containment: Add compatible overhead coverage when high shots or nearby surfaces make it necessary.
  6. Stability: Use the manufacturer's assembly method and compatible anchoring or weighting for the surface and setting.
  7. Clear swing area: Leave enough space for every intended golfer and club.
  8. Practice balls and clubs: Confirm that every item is appropriate for the net, surface, and available room.

Optional items include a Net Guardian for repeated impact, Sandbags for compatible setups, lighting, storage, alignment tools, and a launch monitor.

Start with the space, not the package name

Measure clear height, width, and depth. Include the net frame, the golfer's position, club travel, walking room, and anything that enters the area while the setup is in use. Test slow practice swings without a ball.

The manufacturer-listed frame sizes range from the 5-foot-wide by 6-foot-high Mini to the 10-foot-wide by 9-foot-6-inch-high Pro XL. Every frame in this comparison is listed at 3 feet 6 inches deep. These are frame dimensions, not total practice-space requirements.

Compare every size in our golf net chooser. If the setup is going in a garage, use the garage golf net guide before selecting a frame.

Net only or golf practice package?

Choose a net-only product if you already own a suitable hitting surface and have planned your stance area, stability, and containment.

Choose a golf practice package when the exact listed components cover more of the setup you need. Do not assume every package contains the same turf size or accessories.

The Net Return directly confirmed that its current packages include the 10-foot by 6-foot Pro Turf. That is a substantial floor footprint, including with the smaller net frames, so measure the full turf and stance area rather than planning around the frame alone.

Compact path

The Mini frame is listed at 5 feet wide by 6 feet high by 3 feet 6 inches deep. It is the smallest frame in the current lineup.

Home path

The Home frame is listed at 7 feet wide by 7 feet high by 3 feet 6 inches deep.

Wider practice path

The Pro frame is listed at 8 feet wide by 7 feet 6 inches high by 3 feet 6 inches deep. Larger Pro 8, Pro 9, Pro 10, and Pro XL options are also available in net-only and package configurations.

Match the hitting mat and stance area

Check these details before choosing or reusing a mat:

  • Hitting-area size: Make sure the ball can be placed for the intended clubs and both right- and left-handed golfers when needed.
  • Stance height: A ball raised above or below the golfer's feet can change the practice condition. Plan a compatible stance platform or surface.
  • Floor grip: The mat and stance surface should remain stable through the swing, especially on concrete or smooth flooring.
  • Impact and wear: Confirm that the hitting surface is intended for repeated golf-club impact and understand which parts are replaceable.
  • Indoor use: Protect the underlying floor and account for noise and vibration.
  • Outdoor use: Use a level surface and follow the current care, anchoring, and weather guidance for every component.

A small strike-feedback product can be useful for focused contact work, but it does not automatically replace the stance and hitting surface needed for full-speed net practice. Compare those options in our home golf practice mat guide.

Add containment based on the room

Side and overhead protection depend on the golfer, handedness, shot pattern, distance to the net, and nearby walls, windows, vehicles, people, or property.

Containment products do not remove the need for adequate clearance, proper assembly, supervision, and a room-specific safety check.

Five-minute final check

  • [ ] The frame fits the measured clear space.
  • [ ] Every golfer can make a slow full swing without reaching a wall, ceiling, door, light, or stored item.
  • [ ] The hitting surface will not slide and is suitable for repeated impact.
  • [ ] The golfer's feet and ball are at the intended relative height.
  • [ ] Side and overhead protection cover the expected misses for the room.
  • [ ] Every accessory is compatible with the selected model and variant.
  • [ ] You know exactly what the package includes and what remains to be purchased.
